Working first hand with parents of Autistic children or children who struggle with understanding I know firsthand the challenges of creating predictability and reducing anxiety in daily routines. One strategy that has been incredibly helpful for us is using Objects of Reference. These are tangible objects that represent a specific activity or event in a child's routine, such as showing them their lunchbox before mealtime or their toothbrush before bedtime.

By using Objects of Reference, we are able to visually communicate what is happening next in our child's day, giving them a sense of control and understanding. This has been a game-changer for us, as it has reduced meltdowns and increased our child's independence.

For example, before going outside, we show our child the car keys to signal that we are getting ready to leave the house. This simple action helps to prepare them for the transition and alleviate any anxiety they may feel.

If you want to learn more about how to implement Objects of Reference at home, I invite you to check out my resource library, which provides step-by-step guidance and practical tips for using this strategy effectively. Together, we can create a more predictable and supportive environment for our autistic children.
